FAQ

  • How can I tell whether OpenProtocols will work with my Messaging Service Provider?
  • This largely depends on whether your service provider provides CalDAV/CardDAV and what services they provide. You should contact your service provider to determine the servername and port of their CalDAV/CardDAV services. A list of service providers is available here.
  • Can I use the connector if my Messaging Service Provider does not provide CalDAV or CardDAV?
  • Yes, you can still use the connector, but your contacts and calendar items will not be published to your service provider. You can also use a separate service provider like (Fruux) or indeed anyone who provides DAV services, to publish your calendar. For example, you can connect to your HotMail account via IMAP, and use Apple/iCloud or Fruux to store your Contacts and Calendar.
  • Can I use OpenProtocols against Yahoo! ?
  • Yes, if you configure OpenProtocols to connect to Yahoo!, you will be able to access your Yahoo E-Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Contact Groups and Notes. Yahoo does not appear to provide Tasks, Free-Busy or a Global/Shared address list.
  • Can I use OpenProtocols against Apple/iCloud?
  • Yes, if you configure OpenProtocols to connect to iCloud; you will be able to access iCloud Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Tasks, Groups and Free/Busy information. iCloud does not appear to provide a Global/Shared address list, so this option will not be available within your Outlook Profile.
  • How do I use OpenProtocols with Fruux?
  • Fruux is a service that allows synchronisation of Contacts, Tasks, Calendars across devices. It provides a CalDAV and CardDAV interfaces. Because OpenProtocols allows you to specify separate mail and DAV server settings, you can configure it to publish/integrate Contacts/Calendar/Task items with Fruux.
  • How do I trial the connector?
  • The first step is to download the connector and install it on your Windows Outlook Computer. For testing the connector against your service provider, it is suggested that you create a new Outlook Profile (you can add it to your existing profile once you have validated it against your service provider). You can then configure OpenProtocols as a message service under the profile. The connector will prompt you for your email address and password and will then attempt to determine your settings from your service provider (via DNS lookup and Autodiscovery). You should enable the advanced settings dialog and confirm the DAV settings (or configure an alternate DAV provider if you wish to use a service like Fruux).
